Abdominal tissues and muscles often fail to return to normal following a period of weight gain, weight loss or pregnancy. Stretched beyond optimum capacity the abdomen may not respond to standard exercise and diet programs. A Tummy Tuck is a cosmetic procedure designed to tighten muscles and remove excess skin in order to achieve a smoother and flatter abdomen.
Prior to surgery Doctor Pat will consult with prospective patients, to determine expectations and to explain the procedure, including possible after-effects. This will also help the Doctor assess the patients’ suitability for Tummy Tuck Surgery, and advice on likely results.
The procedure is carried out under general anesthesia, and the patient will need to remain in the clinic for 1 - 2 days after the operation. The Doctor makes one incision across the lower abdomen above the pubic area, and a second around the navel in order to loosen the surrounding skin. He then separates the skin from the abdominal wall and pulls the muscles from both sides of the body before suturing them together. This results in tightened abdominal muscles and a smaller more attractive waistline. Excess skin is then removed and the navel is repositioned for a natural appearance. Finally, the doctor stitches or staples any remaining incisions and surgical gauze is placed over the area to ensure it is clean and free of infection.
Some pain and swelling is likely to be experienced post-operation, for which prescription pain medication can be used. The patient is advised to rest for a few days to minimize discomfort. Some scarring is inevitable, but scars will fade over time, and are in areas of the body normally covered by clothing including swimwear.
